Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Endodontist?
An Endodontist is a dentist who has completed two years additional post-graduate training to specialize in treatment of root canals. He is licensed by the State as a specialist, and in addition, may become a Board Certified Diplomate by successfully passing a rigorous series of examinations. Dr. Copeland is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and is licensed to practice Endodontics in the States of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Would it be better to pull the tooth and get an implant?
An implant is an excellent alternative to a bridge or partial denture for the replacement of missing teeth, but it is always best to try to keep your natural teeth. In addition, implants have two definite disadvantages. The first is the length of time from extraction to a finished restoration, which on average is about one year. It takes approximately six months for the socket to heal and be ready for the placement of the titanium implant base. This must sit another six months until it is stable enough to support the final restoration. Second, is the cost of an implant. A single tooth implant can cost from four to six thousand dollars. This figure can increase if bone grafts or sinus lifts are necessary. The fee for root canal therapy is usually between seven and thirteen hundred dollars. Even if a crown needs to be placed after the root canal is completed, it is still significantly less expensive than an implant. Furthermore, many insurance companies do not cover the cost of an implant, while root canal therapy is covered by most dental insurance plans.
